Advocacy Collective Claims to Have Extracted Millions of Audio Files from the Streaming Giant

An activist organization has stated to have scraped millions of songs from Spotify and is preparing to release them publicly.

Potential Boost for AI Development

Observers said the apparent data breach could aid artificial intelligence firms looking for material to develop their technology.

An entity called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million music files from Spotify and 256 million entries of associated data such as artist and record names. The company, which hosts more than 100 million songs, stated that the breach did not represent its entire inventory.

“We have located and disabled the nefarious user accounts that engaged in illegal scraping,” stated a company spokesperson.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorized access identified a third party scraped public metadata and employed questionable tactics to circumvent DRM [digital rights management].

Group's Declared Goal and Worries

Spotify does not think the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for providing links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

They asserted the audio files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a means of sharing large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “safeguarding humanity’s information and heritage”.

Model Development and Copyright Debate

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ rights, said the breached music would probably be used for developing artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on pirated data is sadly common in the tech sector, so this accessed music is almost certain to be used instructing AI models,” he said.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to a large online archive, a huge online archive of copyrighted books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its systems.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on LinkedIn that members of the public could in theory “create their own private free equivalent of the service”. The executive said it could also enable tech companies to “train on modern music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a key issue between artists, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Responses

Across Britain, creative professionals have raised concerns against a government proposal to let AI companies utilize copyright-protected work without permission unless the owner signals. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the proposal has supported artists’ apprehensions.

A government minister for technology, innovation and development told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, noting that ministers would “take the time to get this right”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
