Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
