The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
