New research suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these medications must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
