Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills in this innovative supernatural story filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to spy on the alleged criminal, his unconventional method proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the youth frightened. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the old telephone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple begin monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet the lead actress achieves to depict the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's second offering by the same director is a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to discover a double agent among the team from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are masters of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of truth or lie takes place. The supporting cast participate the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
