The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
